PREFACE
It isn’t the first time that I have asked for a meeting with the character of this book. But we still haven’t talked to each other. Do I regret it? In the human sense – I do not. In a journalistic sense – I do.
GODFATHER 4
If Francis Ford Coppola would decide to shoot the sequel of his famous trilogy, he would have had to come on that spring morning of 1994 to the Vagankovskoye cemetery.
MCC JAIL. MANHATTAN. NEW YORK CITY. USA. 1998
I waited for this meeting for almost a year. After the arrest of Vyacheslav Kirillovich Ivan’kov, better known in the criminal circles of Russia, as I have already mentioned, under the nickname of Japonchik, I bombarded MCC Administration – the strictest American jail – with letters.
LAWYER FOR THE MAFIA
The office of lawyer Alexander Dobrovinsky is always full of light, and is warm and cozy. The impression is that a luxurious banquet for one hundred of the best celebrities has just ended there, and the aroma of expensive cigars is still in the air.
TAIWANCHIK
I first saw his bodyguards. There were two of them. At least, I saw only two people. The boss himself was modestly sitting down at one of the tables in a small but cozy café.
OLIGARCH FROM ODESSA
This was my third meeting with the first Russian millionaire Sam Kislin in New York City. We first met back in 1996. Then an Odessa emigrant Semyon, who took the American name of Sam during his resettlement to the USA, leased a luxurious office in the Hilton hotel. He always called himself the first Russian billionaire in the USA, showed his guests his mansion near Central Park and the long white limo.
THREE MYSTERIOUS MURDERS
Piccadilly restaurant in the very beginning of Leninsky prospect is really not the most favourite place for police agents of the MDA central machinery. Located a hundred metres from the building on Zhitnaya St. (office of MDA of the Russian Federation), earlier it was quite a popular place for the top officers for dinners, festive parties and business meetings.
KULIKOV’S REPORT
It is now clear already why the Security Service of the Most group made that videorecording in Tel Aviv airport, where Mikhail Cherny together with Anton Malevsky was meeting Shamil Tarpishchev.
OLEG DERIPASKA – WINNER OF THE ALUMINIUM BATTLE
‘People work absolutely not for money,’ said Oleg Deripaska in one of his recent interviews. ‘My generation, Moscow State University graduates, went to business in the early 1990’s because we had nothing to live on.’
PRIVATE DETECTIVE FROM GENEVA CANTON
Spending our time with friends in the Journalists’ House in Moscow, when we saw Volodya entering the bar, we usually called him Colombo for a joke. His similarity with the famous detective from the TV series was really evident.
BEZEK SCANDAL
At the end of March 2001, the Department of International Investigations of the Israeli police detained and brought to the police administration ‘the famous Israeli entrepreneur of Russian origin Mikhail Cherny,’ as the newspapers still call him, as well as his business partners Gad Zeevi, Zeeva Rom and Gad Nashitz.
FAITHFUL TRAITOR
I talked with Sasha [Alexander] a few times, mostly by phone. Having got acquainted in 1998, when Litvinenko, still a lieutenant colonel of the FSA (Russian intelligence agency), actually danced attendance in the court of Boris Berezovsky, we met in the LogoVAZ Reception House where officer Volkov, as Litvinenko called himself at first, apparently, to codify himself, brought his wife and relatives to have dinner.
‘SOVERSHENNO SEKRETNO’
This was Thursday. I remember it clearly because dubbing of our programme devoted to the Chechen war was scheduled for that day. I came to the studio we leased on Tsvetnoy Boulevard by 10 a.m. A TV-set was on in the hall. I learned that Artyom died in an accident from the news.
ALONE, COMPLETELY ALONE…
The star of Mikhail Cherny is slowly but surely setting. In all countries where he would rush ‘to do business.’ In all projects which he would start. Possessing a huge fortune, he becomes friends with the ‘wrong people,’ gets mixed in economic and political shady enterprises...
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
